Abstract
We explored response of Helianthus annuus L. plants to decline of water availability in soil. We demonstrate that plants can respond to soil drying prior to changes in leaf water potential and these changes are mediated by chemical signals. The pH of xylem sap is the most important candidate for the early long distance signal that affects stomatal apperture in H. annuus plants. The changes of sap pH in relation to soil water content are non-linear with one maximum. The pattern of changes in xylem sap composition indicates that also other ions such nitrate and sulphate most likely contribute to the modulation of strength of the pH signal in effect on ABA redistribution and, consequently, regulatory effects on stomata.
