Abstract
The chapter describes an advanced implementation of new approach in regional medical imaging. The system has been developing at the Institute of Computer Science of Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic since 1998.At the beginning the system was the first of its kind in the Czech Republic. The goal of described system is to change the thinking of medical specialists and to get them cooperate and share data about their patients. The system facilitates fast and secure communication among individual hospitals, enable delivering some services through the computer network as well as offers other capabilities of today’s computer systems and data networks to medical users. The system deals with secure transmitting, archiving, and sharing of medical image data originating from various modalities (computed tomography, magnetic resonance, mammography, etc.) The principles of background technologies, the security of the data stored and transported over the network, as well as monitoring principals are described in detail. One of very important parts is implementation of authentication echanism in the network of DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) compliant applications. The mechanism is based on Public Key Infrastructure and on IPSEC protocol. Teaching has always been one of the most important parts of radiology. The system and its database of anonymous image studies supports research activities and also serves as learning tool for medical students and young radiologists.
