Abstract

The article presents the results of the author's research into the newspaper discourse with focus on the use of binary oppositions in crime reports in current British press. The analysis demonstrates how binary oppositions are used to convey and delimit the identity of victims and killers, where the basic type of opposition is good vs. evil. The use of binary oppositions, which are one of the primary features of simplification in newspaper discourse, enables to identify victims and killers and at the same time express their social status (positive or negative) and thus express evaluation and opinion which are presented to the reader together with facts.

Článek předkládá výsledky výzkumu v oblasti novinového stylu se zaměřením na užití binárních opozic ve zprávách o zločinu v současném britském tisku. Analýza demonstruje jak jsou binární opozice používány pro sdělování a vymezení identity obětí a vrahů, kde základní opozicí je dobro vs. zlo. Užití těchto binárních opozic, které jsou jedním ze základních prvků simplifikace v novinovém stylu, umožňuje nejen oběti a vrahy identifikovat a zároveň vyjádřit jejich soicální status, a to buď pozitivní nebo negativní, a tím i vyjádření určité evaluace a tedy i názoru, které jsou čtenáři překládány spolu s fakty.
