Abstract
This paper explores how surface identical morphemes can produce different effects on the phonological structure. I focus on zero case markers in Czech nominal declension and show that they reveal a striking phonological pattern which has gone unnoticed in the literature. I argue that the contrastive behavior of stems ending in consonant liquid clusters in Nsg and Gpl follows from their different underlying representations.
