In English
This chapter has a single objective: to define the fundamental linguistic terminology, which is then to be used in all studies and related chapters of this book consistently. Examining in multilingual persons the influence of their own (individual) languages on the text skills, i.e. the ability to create clear texts adhering to the corresponding convention in the given language (text type skill), we must first define the scope of the concept of text, find out what its abstract unit is (an invariant of text), and consider the typology of texts. Given that the terminology of text linguistics is not yet fully established (see e.g. the inconsistent use of terms such as text and discourse in English, different concepts of the term texteme etc.), a broad theoretical basis was employed to determine stringent terminology for this book. This applies particularly to the terms text type (Textsorte) and kind of text (Texttyp). Furthermore, their terminological equivalents in the relevant languages - Czech and English – are suggested.
