Abstract

Terminologies are hierarchically organised sets of naming units, terms, which are generally not in the spotlight of linguistics. The creation of terms takes place autonomously within individual disciplines, which either follow traditional subject-specific patterns or adopt coinages arising from the current scientific or professional discourse. Yet, the approaches to lexical enrichment, i.e. creation of new terms, taken in individual disciplines deserve attention of lexicologists for the ability to reveal the variety as well as creative power of language. The paper examines such term-formation processes in a selection of disciplines providing a balanced picture of traditional and relatively new, fast growing terminologies. As English is the dominant language in most fields of activity these days, it rather influences lexis of other languages. For this reason, attention has been paid also to the corresponding newly emerging terminologies in Czech (e.g. marketing, power generation, geocaching, acrobatic skiing) to see whether there are any structural analogies to English terminologies, apart from borrowing, loan translation, etc. The paper attempts to provide a classification of term-formation processes seen in the indicated broader context.

Abstract (in Czech)

Terminologie jsou hierarchicky uspořádané systémy pojmenovacích jednotek, termínů, které obecně nejsou příliš v ohnisku zájmu lingvistiky. Tvorba termínů se odehrává autonomně v rámci jednotlivých disciplín, které se buď řídí svými tradičními vzorci charakteristickými pro daný obor, anebo akceptují novotvary ze současného vědeckého nebo profesního odborného diskursu. Přesto si však přístupy k obohacování slovní zásoby, t.j. zde k tvorbě nových termínů, preferované v jednotlivých disciplínách zasluhují pozornost lexikologů pro svou schopnost odhalit rozmanitost a kreativní potenciál jazyka. Příspěvek analyzuje takové procesy tvorby termínů ve vybraných disciplínách, pokoušeje se podat vyvážený obraz tradičních i relativně nových, rychle rostoucích terminologií. Protože angličtina je v současnosti dominantním jazykem ve většině oborů činnosti, významně ovlivňuje slovní zásobu jiných jazyků. Proto byla pozornost věnována také odpovídajícím nově vznikajícím terminologiím v češtině (např. marketingu, výroby energie, geocachingu, akrobatického lyžování), aby se ukázalo, zda v nich existují nějaké strukturní analogie s anglickými terminologiemi, a to kromě výpůjček, doslovných překladů (kalků) atd. Tento příspěvek se pokouší navrhnout klasifikaci termínotvorných procesů viděných v naznačeném širším kontextu.
