Abstract

Slonovinové dílo známé jako Diptych z pěti částí, dnes uložené v pokladu katedrály v Miláně, zastává v kontextu raněkřesťanského umění výjimečné místo. Předkládaná kniha se snaží nejen kriticky revidovat dosavadní hypotézy o jeho dataci a provenienci, ale také objasnit jeho uměleckou úlohu, zjistit možného objednavatele i důvod jeho vzniku a stanovit jeho uměleckohistorický a kulturněhistorický význam. Publikace je dvojjazyčná – český a anglický text – a obsahuje bohatou obrazovou přílohu.

Abstract (in English)

The ivory Diptych of Five Parts, deposited today in the cathedral treasury in Milan, occupies an exceptional position in the context of the Early Christian art. The book does not set its aim to merely subject the proposed hypotheses to critical thought. It is primarily an attempt to answer other questions such as the clarification of the artistic models, identifying the possible commissioner of the work, determining the reason for its creation as well as its art historical and cultural historical significance. The book is bilingual – Czech and English – and contains extensive visual supplement.
