Ci s tercian anti - heretical preaching with its particular rhetorical patterns to characterize dissidents (Kienzle 2001) played an important part in the legitimization of violence lea d ing eventually t o the institutionalization of the inquisitional procedure. Building on the results of recent hist o riography of medieval persecution and on social scientific theories of the legitimization of violence, this paper will analyze Cistercian anti - heretical writi ng in the second half of the 12th century in order to identify the means by which physical violence against the heretics attained legitimacy in Christian society.
