Abstract
Abstract (in English)
Macocha Abyss, located in Protected Landscape Area of Moravian Karst in South Moravia region, is the deepest gorge of its kind in the Czech Republic and also in Central Europe. It is 138.5 meters deep and there are two platforms at the edge of the abyss that offer beautiful views, the Upper Brigde and the Lower Bridge. The bottom of Macocha is a part of Punkva Caves tour, there are two lakes and an underground river Punkva, which one may cruise on with motorboats. This region is a popular destination for tourists of all ages, especially during the summer. Throughout history and also nowdays, Macocha Abyss is also well known as a place, where desperate individuals end their lives by jumping from the edge into the depth. In past 20 years (from 1995 to 2014) there were 29 cases of suicides – 22 men and 7 women. From the Forensic Medicine point of view, autopsy findings do not vary from other cases of deaths due to falling from a great hight to a rugged landscape. From the Police investigation point of view, these cases are very specific. In 2011 there was a camera installed by the Upper Brigde of Macocha Abyss, which is a typical location for committing suicide. Therefore when the body is found on the bottom of the abyss, the record can be inspected to view the suicide act and exclude other persons taking part in the incident.
