Coal was the key source driving industrial revolution and development not only in Czech lands, but in the whole Austria-Hungary. In fact, when Austrian-Hungarian Empire dissolved, 90% of bituminous coal production as well as 84% sub-bituminous coal production was located on the soil of Czech lands, which stroke Austrian and Hungarian economy hard. During the socialist era, coal was the key source of domestic energy production and the production culminated in late 1980s when around 130 Mt/y of coal was produced. This tremendous growth is however weighted with current significant drop in coal production and non-friendly economic environment of last years and decades. Also, country´s deposits are getting depleted and the whole coal industry reacts to this development to maximize profitability. The following text presents the current coal industry in the Czech Republic and discusses what the key factors the Czech Republic coal industry is currently driven by are. ER -
