Abstract
The author examines Miloš Forman's 1981 film Ragtime, which was based on the eponymous 1975 novel by E. L. Doctorow. He demonstrates how the resulting product is affected by the filmmaker's history, memory and experience, authorial preferences. In addition he discusses the characteristics of the respective interpretive communities making sense of and evaluating both works.
