TY - JOUR ID - 1321618 AU - Kudrnáčová, Naděžda PY - 2015 TI - Verbs of Locomotion and the Semantics of the Unaccusative/Unergative Differentiation JF - Linguistica Silesiana VL - 36 IS - autumn SP - 73-88 EP - 73-88 PB - Polska Akademia Nauk, Oddział w Katowicach SN - 02084228 KW - directed motion constructions KW - unaccusative verbs KW - unergative verbs KW - agent vs. patient classification KW - energetic chain N2 - The paper seeks to provide arguments against the commonly held view that the presence/absence of a directional phrase decides on the verb's unaccusative/unergative status. What seems to play a crucial role is whether the subject argument in structures with manner of motion verbs is in full control of the movement or not. The arguments of path verbs fall outside the agent/patient classification; path verbs thus fall outside the unaccusative/unergative distinction. ER -
