In English

The aim of the presentation was to show the exceptional role of Russian literature in the development of Russian social and political thinking. Due to the strict censorship during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I it was impossible to talk about topical issues of the then Russia openly. Intelligentsia and the emerging social movement could discuss these on the pages of the so called thick journals and literary works. The author of the presentation focused on books of travels in France and Spain by P.V. Annenkov and V.P. Botkin, with the help of which the two literary critics spread the ideas of European liberalism in Russia.
