Abstract
Abstract (in English)
On top of the Aventine hill stands the basilica of Santa Sabina, one of the most significant monuments of Late Antiquity. Its main entrance consists of a spacious narthex, characterized by the presence of extraordinary works of art, such as the old wooden door, the fifth century decoration of the painted marble and the early medieval imago of the Theotokos. The narthex, many years neglected by the research, was originally one of the areas of the greatest splendor and importance of the entire building. In addition, this space was probably primarily conceived for the catechumens and the penitents and had to serve as a true liminal zone. It was a world between two worlds, area of physical and spiritual passage. This book aims to investigate this place in the round, with special attention to its history, the archaeology of the monument and its decorations. Its goal is to reveal the Late Antique facies of this narthex, which is extraordinarily preserved in substance. We want to offer the reader a synergistic look conceived to show how the coexistence of different media allows a more comprehensive understanding of the artistic scenario during the Late Antiquity.
