Abstract

The article emphasizes the theoretical concept of English as an international language extensively used in intercultural communication and presents practical implications of the concept for intercultural learning and teaching. The article describes how international students at Masaryk University facilitate their intercultural communication through development of communicative and intercultural competence in the course of Intercultural Communication. The main objective of the course is to show the students how to adopt English language as a cultural tool for successful intercultural communication. The students learn how their identities and cultural perceptions effect their intercultural communication; they further study the varieties of styles of communication and non-verbal cues and their meanings. The emphasis is given on enhancing the students' communicative competence in order to make their intercultural communication effective.

Článek zdůrazňuje teoretické pojetí anglického jazyka jako prostředku dorozumívání v interkulturní komunikaci a představuje praktické důsledky tohoto pojetí pro učení a vyučování interkulturní komunikace. Článek popisuje, jak mezinárodní studenti na Masarykově univerzitě v Brně se zdokonalují v interkulturní komunikaci prostřednictvím rozvíjení komunikativních a interkulturních kompetencí v předmětu Interkulturní komunikace. Cílem předmětu je ukázat studentům, jak používat angličtinu jako kulturní nástroj v interkulturní komunikaci. Studenti poznávají, jak jejich identity a kulturní vnímání reality ovlivňují jejich komunikaci s jinými v interkulturním kontextu; studují různé styly komunikace a neverbální signály a jejich významy. Důraz je kladen na zdokonalování komunikativní kompetence vedoucí k úspěšné interkulturní komunikaci.
