Anotace

Cet article présente une reconsidération actuelle de l'origine du manuscrit Lyon, Bibliotheque municipale, ms. PA 36, contenant une traduction complete occitan du Nouveau Testament et un texte cathare connu comme le Rituel de Lyon. Le codex de Lyon est important non seulement pour l'histoire des traditions chrétiennes dissidentes, mais aussi pour l'histoire des traductions vernaculaires médiévales de la Bible. Malgré leurs efforts depuis le milieu du XIXe siecle, les chercheurs n'ont pas réussi a proposer des arguments convaincants concernant sa genese. Les dates suggérées pour le codex et le Rituel de Lyon varient considérablement aussi. A la base des recherches linguistiques antérieures et preuves internes et externes, nous soutenons que loin d'etre le témoin de l'âge d'or supposé du catharisme occitan au début du XIIIe siecle, le codex ainsi que le rituel de Lyon sont liés a une tentative vigoureuse de restaurer le christianisme cathare en Languedoc, dirigé par un ancien notaire d'Ax, Peire Autier, au début du XIVe siecle. Cette constatation est une contribution importante a l'histoire et l'interprétation du manuscrit PA 36, du Rituel de Lyon, et de la plus ancienne traduction existante du Nouveau Testament en occitan.

This article presents an up-to-date reconsideration of the origin of the manuscript Lyon, Bibliotheque municipale, ms. PA 36, containing a complete Occitan translation of the New Testament and a Cathar text known as the Ritual of Lyon. The codex of Lyon is important not only for the history of dissident Christian traditions, but also for the history of medieval vernacular translations of the Bible. Despite scrutinizing the manuscript since mid-nineteenth century, scholars have fallen short of suggesting convincing arguments concerning its genesis. The dates proposed for the codex and the Ritual of Lyon vary significantly as well. Building upon earlier linguistic findings and considering internal as well as external evidence, we argue that far from being the witness of the supposed golden age of Occitan Catharism at the beginning of the thirteenth century, the codex as well as the Ritual of Lyon itself are connected with a spirited early-fourteenth-century attempt at restoring Cathar Christianity in Languedoc, headed by a former notary of Ax, Peter Autier. This finding is an important contribution to the history and interpretation of the manuscript, the Ritual of Lyon, and the oldest extant translation of the New Testament in Occitan.
