Abstract

The general research question posed by many anthropologists studying rituals is “why people do it?” Evolutionary oriented researchers therefore focus on exploring the adaptive value of rituals, so whether they somehow contribute to an individual’s survival and reproduction. To address these questions, I found myself on the island of Mauritius, where I have spent almost two years doing fieldwork, especially on religious rituals. In my research I am applying a theoretical model from human behavioural ecology, which targets the measuring and recording of ritual investments in an individual’s lifetime and the variation of such investments within- and between groups. More specifically, I explore ritual investments through the lenses of the theory of costly signalling, that sees them as reliable indicators of individual’s qualities, which are selected for by his future cooperative partners.Methodologically, the model rests on the assumption of optimal decision making that maximizes fitness enhancing (adaptive) behaviours.

Abstract (in English)

Mnoho antropológov študujúcich rituály si kladie otázku prečo ich ľudia vlastne vykonávajú. Evolučne orienotvaní bádatelia sa preto sústreďujú na vysvetlenie adaptívnej hodnoty rituálov, teda na to, či nejako prispievajú k jedincovmu prežitiu a reprodukcii., Pri hľadaní odpovedí na tieto otázky som sa ocitol na ostrove Maurícius, kde som strávil takmer dva roky terénnym výskumom, najmä so zameraním na náboženské rituály. V mojom výskume aplikujem model z humánnej behaviorálnej ekológie, ktorý sa zameriava na meranie a zaznamenávanie rituálnych investícii počas jedincovho života a variácie takýchto investícii v rámci skupiny a medzi skupinami. Konkrétne sa pozerám na rituálne investície cez optiku teórie nákladnej signalizácie, ktorá ich vníma ako spoľahlivé indikátory individuálnych kvalít, ktoré sú selektované budúcimi kooperatívnymi partnermi. Metodologicky model spočíva na predpoklade optimálneho rozhodovania maximalizujúceho zdatnosť-podporujúce (adaptívne) typy správania.
