The study describe the development of Czech independent theatre from the end of 30s of 20th century till 1989 and its continuous changes in several generations. It call attention to the problematic definition of the independent theatre in Czechoslovakia especially after 1948 as the totalitarian state did not make possible an existence of the independent theatre in a literal sense. As the independent theatre could be considered the theatre of the underground only.

Studie popisuje vývoj českého nezávislého divadla od konce 30. let 20. století do roku 1989 a jeho postupné proměny v několika generacích. Upozorňuje na problematickou definici nezávislého divadla v Československu zvláště po roce 1948, neboť totalitní moc neumožňovala existenci nezávislého divadla a za nezávislé divadlo je možné považovat pouze divadlo undergroundu.
