Abstract

Kniha seznamuje s prameny, kterých k rekonstrukci dějin Normanů můžeme využít, a hodnotí význam ság, hrdinské poezie Starší Eddy a básní skaldů v tomto smyslu. Zabývá se vědomostmi a představami antických a středověkých autorů o Skandinávii, Islandu a dalších ostrovech na severu Evropy a rozebírá sociální prostředí, z něhož se vyvíjí vikinská společnost, poukazuje na význam náčelníků, králů a jejich družin v progresivním vývoji Skandinávie, na jejich sakrální typ moci a porovnává vývoj doby vendelské a vikinské s vývojem doby velkého stěhování národů. Zamýšlí se nad významem pojmu "viking", podrobně popisuje vztahy mezi Vikingy a karlovskou říší, anglosaskou Anglií, Irskem a ostrovy v Severním moři, kolonizaci Islandu a Grónska, objevení Ameriky, výboje do Hispánie a Itálie, budování normanského panství v Itálii a na Sicílii a hodnotí podíl Varjagů na vzniku Kyjevské Rusi. Sleduje běžné ekonomické činnosti Normanů (zemědělství, řemeslo, obchod), jedna kapitola je věnována vojenství a lodím. Samostatná kapitola líčí také integraci Vikingů do společností, na jejichž teritoriích se usadili. Krátce kniha pojednává o polyteistickém náboženství severských Germánů, a poté srovnává dva typy jejich christianizace – královskou a misijní. Zamýšlí se nad etikou skaldské poezie, eddických básní a runových nápisů. Pomocí srovnání s dalšími přechodnými obdobími dějin hledá nejvýznamnější příčiny vzniku velkých migrací, zvýšené vojenské aktivity různých populací a hodnotí význam vikinského věku jako celku. Vychází z latinských, řeckých, staroruských a skandinávských pramenů, pramenné údaje konfrontuje a doplňuje s výsledky nejnovějších archeologických výzkumů.

Abstract (in English)

The monograph informs about the sources for the history of Normans and evaluates the significance of the sagas, the heroic poetry of Edda and the poems of skalds. It reconstructs the knowledge of the Ancient and Medieval writers about the Scandinavia, Island and the others islands in the North Sea. It analyses the social environment, the society of Vikings was developed from, demonstrates the significance of the chieftains and kings and their retinues in the progressive development in Scandinavia and demonstrates the sacrality of the power of chieftains and kings, too. It compares the development of the Vendel and Viking period to that of the so called Great migration period. It rethinks the right significance of the term „viking“; describes the interactions between the Vikings and the Karolingian Empire, Anglo-Saxon England, Ireland and the islands in the North Sea. It also encompasses the settlement of Island and Greenland, the discovery of North America (Vinland), the raids to Spain and Italy, the development of the Normans rule in Italy and Sicily and evaluates the influence of the so called Varjags on the establishing of Kievan Rus. It is also devoted to the common economic of Normans (the agriculture, crafts, trade), their warfare and ships. The other chapter describes the integration of the Vikings into the societies, which they have been settled in. The old North German religion and the two types of the evangelization of Scandinavia – by the kings and by the missionaries - are both, described and compared. The monograph reflects also the ethics of the skalds-poetry, the Edda and the runic inscriptions. By comparison with the great migration of peoples and with the other transitive periods in the history, it searches for the causes of the great migrations and the periods of the increased aggressiveness of the peoples. Generally, it evaluates the significance of the Viking Age.
