It is a short noncoding RNA that mediates protein production on posttranscriptional level. The expression of miRNAs is a dynamic response of a cell to the changes in the environment and its inner needs. Fine balance in miRNA production is essential for proper function of the cell and the aberrations in this control machinery might lead to various pathologies. For this reason, miRNAs are widely studied as potential biomarkers or targets of treatment in numerous diseases (cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, etc.). Similarly to other neurological disorders is the origin and progression of epilepsy not completely understood. miRNAs might prove as a useful tool to address this problem. In our project, we have focused on the analysis of miRNA profile in hippocampal tissue of patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, the most common type of epilepsy. We have identified 20 miRNAs with altered expression in epileptic brain tissue. Putative targets those miRNAs participate in the pathways associated with epilepsy which suggests possibility of future miRNA based therapeutics. ER -
