Abstract
Aratus' "Phainomena" was very popular treatise on astronomy in ancient times. Thus it was translated into Latin by a number of Roman authors, among others, by Marcus Tullius Cicero and Germanicus Iulius Caesar. The paper focused on the question whether these two authors only translated the information contained in Aratus' text or whether they also managed to imitate the didactic tone of the poem. Their methods of instruction and maintaining the contact with their readers were examined with regard to their attitudes to the source text.
