Surveys such as that conducted by Jehlička, Kostelcký and Smith (2013) have shown that Czech urban food self-provisioning is not just a coping strategy but rather specific hobby bringing health, environmental and social benefits – “quiet sustainability”. However, much less is known about specific communities emerging within urban-rural environments. Whereas that many scholars describe individualization and disintegration of rural communities in the country, we have observed village-like communities within urban environments. The paper builds on the case study research within five agricultural allotment gardens in Brno, Czech republic. It is based on an analysis of in-depth interviews with active gardeners and members of horticultural associations. The paper shows that the allotment gardens are not only environmentally and economically beneficial, but they provide also quasi-rural space for community building in cities. ER -
