Péče o pacienty infikované HBV nebo HCV se za posledních 20 let významně zlepšila díky lepšímu porozumění patofyziologii onemocnění, zdokonalení diagnostiky, terapeutických a preventivních možností. Cílem léčby chronické hepatitidy B je prodloužit délku života a zlepšit jeho kvalitu prostřednictvím zábrany progrese chronické hepatitidy do jaterní cirhózy, dekompenzace cirhózy a vzniku hepatocelulárního karcinomu (HCC). Chronickou infekci HBV lze v současnosti léčit buď tenofovirem, či entekavirem per os (naprostá většina případů), a to dlouhodobě (roky) nebo i doživotně, nebo pegylovaným interferonem alfa-2a, který se podává injekčně jednou týdně po dobu 48 týdnů (omezená možnost použití). Primárním cílem léčby chronické hepatitidy C je vyléčení infekce, tedy dosažení setrvalé virologické odpovědi definované jako nedetekovatelná nukleová kyselina viru (HCV RNA) v periferní krvi 12 nebo 24 týdnů po skončení antivirové léčby. V současnosti jsou standardem léčby chronické infekce HCV bezinterferonové režimy, které mají účinnost 95–100 % a minimum nežádoucích účinků a kontraindikací. ER -
