Eating disorders present a substantial health problem in current society. Their development is affected by several individual and societal factors, including traditional and, now, also digital media. Digital technologies (especially the Internet and mobile phones) are embedded in the everyday lives of most people in Western countries: they shape not only the way we communicate, but also affect our norms, values, and behavior. Considering their potential to affect our lives, it is essential to understand their role also in relation to eating disorders. The proposed symposium is centered on the role of digital technologies in current eating habits, with specific focus on the development, prevention, and treatment of eating disorders. We will present the most recent and unique data from ongoing research projects in the Czech Republic, including interviews with clients who suffer from eating disorders and therapists who treat such disorders, plus quantitative data depicting the behavior and assessments of the visitors of websites focused on diet or exercise.
