Abstract
Four British women novelists and their volumes of essays published around the turn of the millennuim are debated in relation to their novel writing and the wide range of different forms of the essay that their different approaches display. The writers and works included are Jeanette Winterson's Art Objects, A.S. Byatt's On Stories and Histories, Marina Warner's Signs and Wonders and Zadie Smith's Changing My Mind.
