In den letzten Jahren durchgeführte Grabungen haben neue Erkenntnisse zur Entstehung und zu Vorgängern der steinernen Burg erbracht. Dies bot den Anlass der Burg und ihrer Umgebung eine Studie zu widmen. Dabei werden einerseits die neuen wie alten Funde und Befunde besprochen. Ein ältester Bau – eine Holz-Erde Konstruktion mit steinernem Unterbau ist den Dendrodaten nach im späteren 11. Jahrhundert errichtet worden. Diese Datierung wird auch durch die zeitliche Einordnung der Kleinfunde, allen voran der Keramik, gestützt. Die erste Befestigung aus dem 11. Jahrhundert wurde in einer Zeit errichtet als sich eine erste Grenze zwischen den böhmisch-mährischen Gebieten der Přemysliden und der bayrischen Marchia orientalis entwickelt. Damals etabliert sich eine Kette von Burgen beider Machtblöcke entlang dieser Grenzzone. Der alte Burg in Nikolsburg wird daher als vorgeschobener Eingangspunkt entlang einer wichtigen Nord-Süd-Verbindung und als Kontaktpunkt angesehen. ER -
