Traslate via mare dalla Palestina, esse giunsero nella capitale approdando al cosiddetto “Molo di Calcedonia”, uno degli scali della costa nordorientale della citta'. La ricezione dei resti santi segui' un programma preciso in piu' tappe. La processione, accompagnata da una folla entusiasta, venne guidata dall’imperatore Arcadio in persona insieme al Senato e alle piu' alte autorita' militari e civili in carica, cioe' il prefetto al pretorio Antemio e il prefetto della citta', Emiliano. Il corteo si stacco' dal porto e attraverso' con ogni probabilita' la piazza detta Strategion per poi raggiungere il centro episcopale, ovvero la Grande Chiesa, all’epoca chiamata semplicemente Sophia. Il fervore devozionale che accompagno' l’evento attiro' l’attenzione anche di appassionati osservatori contemporanei come Gerolamo, il quale descrisse con toni di ammirazione la gente che andava incontro ai resti sacri e li accoglieva con gioia «come fossero il corpo vivo di Samuele». Le reliquie del profeta Samuele vennero conservate nella Grande Chiesa per circa cinque anni e in seguito, molto probabilmente il 5 ottobre 411, vennero trasferite in un santuario espressamente costruito e inaugurato per accoglierle. Il nuovo sacello sorgeva annesso alla chiesa di S. Giovanni Evangelista, situata nella tenuta imperiale chiamata Ioukoundianai, nei pressi del sobborgo militare dell’Hebdomon, Campo Marzio della Nuova Roma. ER -
