TY - CONF ID - 1406029 AU - Rambousek, Jiří PY - 2017 TI - Western novels in Czech : translations and pseudo-translations KW - western novel KW - pulp magazine KW - pseudo-translation UR - http://adtranslationem.phil.muni.cz/en/2017/cfp N2 - Jiří Levý deals with various types of relation between translations and their source texts, neither he, nor Anton Popovič, however, arrive at the notion of pseudo-translation. Pseudo-translations were discussed only later within the Descriptive Translation Studies approach. In the Czech literary production, they are often mentioned in connection with the commercial production of pulp novels, especially in the era of the arrival of western novels. The notion that pseudo-translations were very strongly represented among these texts has been corrected by the bibliographical work of Marcel Arbeit’s team and later by Pavel Janáček and Michal Jareš. Looking at selected texts from the Czech pulp magazine production of the 1940s, the present paper discusses the types and quality of these translations, and considers the understanding of the term pseudo-translation: from the functional point of view, it should sometimes also include texts that suggest their tranlsational nature to the readers, even if they are not explicitly presented as translations.
