Abstract
Ariel et Caliban, deux personnages de la Tempete de Shakespeare, servent de métaphore emblématique de plusieurs interprétations de la décolonisation, particulierement dans le contexte caribéen (Rubén Dário, José Enrique Rodó, Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon). Si les dichotomies de la métaphore, appliquées a l'axe américain Nord/Sud (blanc/noir, maître/esclave, dominant/dominé, civilisé/barbare, raison/instinct, matérialisme/spiritualité), ont été majoritairement orientées en fonction d’argumentations idéologiques jusqu’aux années 1970, les décennies successives, du moins dans le domaine francophone, ont progressivement porté l’attention sur le facteur civilisationnel dans le contexte de la migration et de la confrontation des cultures et des modes de pensée et de sensibilité. Les développements de ce type ont eu un impact positif sur la littérature québécoise, notamment dans les oeuvres des auteurs de la diaspora haitienne, tels que Émile Ollivier, Dany Laferriere et Gérard Étienne. Partout ou il existe une opposition thématique entre les topographies de Montréal et d'Haiti, les registres stylistiques refletent les contrastes entre la distance intellectuelle et l'émotion lyrique ou épique, entre l'individualisme et la communauté, la rationalité et le surnaturel des croyances collectives. Placés entre la terre d'accueil et la terre d'origine, les personnages cherchent des réponses émotionnelles et noétiques a leurs existence d'exilés.
Abstract (in English)
Ariel and Caliban, two characters from Shakespeare’s Tempest, served as emblematic metaphors for several interpretations of decolonization, particularly in the Caribbean context (Rubén Dário, José Enrique Rodó, Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon). Initially, the dichotomy was used along the North/South American axis (white/black, master/slave, civilized/barbaric, reason/instinct, and materialism/spirituality) and the argumentation of the authors in question was mainly ideological, focusing on the various civilizational factors. Since the Nineteen Seventies, these meanings have shifted to express the negotiation of cultural differences, or were used as an aesthetic counterpoint. Developments of this kind have had a positive impact on Quebec literature, particularly in the works of authors of the Haitian diaspora, such as Émile Ollivier, Dany Laferriere and Gérard Étienne. Wherever there is a thematic divide between the topographies of Montreal and those of Haiti the stylistic registers reflect the contrasts between intellectual distance and lyrical or epic emotion, between individualism and community, rationality and supernatural collective beliefs. Being positioned between the host land and the land of origin the characters look for emotional and noetical answers to their exiled existence.
