Abstract

War is regarded as a negative phenomenon within the Christian religion. However, under certain circumstances, the Church fathers took a different approach and viewed a military conflict from another perspective. Some of them derogated or justified the military or power-seeking activities of the Christian emperors. In the 4th century, the phenomenon of „justified“ war started to strengthen. War became part of the divine plan, especially fighting against the pagans or their opposition. The interpretation of military conflict as the divine punishment for the sinful life of the empire's citizens appeared during the barbarian threat and assaults too.

Abstract (in Czech)

Navzdory skutečnosti, že v rámci křesťanského náboženství je válka chápána jednoznačně jako negativní jev, v konkrétních okolnostech a případech můžeme vidět, že církevní otcové dokázali vnímat vojenský konflikt také z jiné perspektivy. Několik z nich zlehčuje nebo omlouvá některé vojenské, ale i mocenské aktivity křesťanských císařů. Ve 4. stol. se také začíná posilovat fenomén "spravedlivé" války, která už má charakter uskutečňování božího plánu, zejména v případě, kdy je vedena proti pohanům nebo pohanské opozici. Také v případě hrozby a útoků barbarů se objevuje interpretace vojenského konfliktu a plenění jako božího trestu za hříšný život obyvatel impéria.
