Abstract
My interpretation of Lukács’ late texts does not aim to resolve the conflict between externalist and internalist models of interpretation. Therefore, my aim is not methodological. I am following the perspective of cultural sociology in dealing with Lukács and his texts. The oeuvre of Georg Lukács is not a closed field with an already revealed essence. Rather, his name signifies an open domain of meaning, whose character is not fixed but is continually revised by application. This open domain of meaning is perhaps mediated by what hermeneutics conceives as historically effected consciousness. The openness of Lukács’ oeuvre also stands for future applications, dependent upon recently unknown historical situations. Simply, I claim the importance of a reconstructive, hermeneutic engagement with the horizon of expectations both in Lukács’ texts as well as in the case of their applications.
