Abstract
This paper deals with references of law, which are mentioned in the comedy Curculio, written by Titus Maccius Plautus. There are many references of law in the text of the comedy, that can be divided into two groups – intentional and spontaneous. Plautus uses intentional references to achieve comical effects (e. g. usage of overly formal legal terminology in inappropriate situations). The spontaneous references of law are those, where the plot merely reflects the legal regulation (which might be incomprehensible for a modern reader) without any special purpose. In both cases, considering the lack of legal education of Plautus, we must also examine to which extent the references of law correspond to the legal regulation of that time, or whether its meaning is slightly distorted.
