Abstract

Spojené státy americké se mohou pyšnit mnoha světovými prvenstvími, ale vedoucí pozici v počtu vězňů si za rámeček dají jen stěží. Proč jsou americká vězení tak plná a výstavba nových věznic neustává? Jaké jsou historické příčiny téměř nepřetržitého nárůstu vězeňské populace v USA? A z jakého důvodu je tato populace většinově afroamerická, hispánská a čítá čím dál více žen? Přednáška Jana Beneše, Ph.D. představí stěžejní historické momenty rozmachu tzv. průmyslově-vězeňského systému v USA. Poukáže na to, jak tvrdá protidrogová politika a rasismus vedou k rozpadu etnicky a ekonomicky minoritních a marginalizovaných komunit. Závěrečná část přednášky pak zanalyzuje vlivy rozbujelého justičního a vězeňského systému na vývoj americké populace a ekonomiky obecně.

Abstract (in English)

The United States rank first in many categories, but being the world leader in the number of incarcerated people is hardly a title to be proud of. Why are American prisons so full and why does the country keep building new ones? What are the historical causes of a continual increase in the American incarcerated population? And why is this population predominantly African American, Hispanic, and includes an increasing number of women? The lecture provides an overview of historic moments in the development of the prison-industrial complex in the United States. It highlights how harsh anti-drug policies and racism have led to the disintegration of ethnic and economic minorities and marginalized communities. The last part of the lecture analyzes the effects of the burgeoning justice and carceral system on the general development of American society and its economy.
