Abstract
Anchored in the framework of functional linguistics, the resarch paper attempts to present and compare two renowned linguists who, in their days, both researched what is now labelled information structure and who succeeded in elaborating revealing concepts of the sentence, viz. Hungarian scholar Samuel Brassai and Czech scholar Jan Firbas. The paper focuses on their understanding of the sentence, above all the topic-focus articulation, segmentation and functional sentence perspective.
