Abstract
In this presentation the author discusses material design in ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses at tertiary level. Current textbooks aimed at students of natural sciences are analysed using the tools of critical discourse analysis with a focus on various idiolects and linguistic background of the students and academics featured in the listening tasks, their roles and relative power positions. Examples of materials designed by the teacher herself are presented and their benefits and drawbacks discussed.
