Abstract

Jaká je a jaká byla role žen v církvi? Dnes jsou ženy, protože nemohou být vysvěcené, postavené mimo církevní hierarchii, která je složená pouze z vysvěcených osob. Ale bylo tomu tak vždy? Na tuto otázku hledá odpověď kniha „Ženy u oltáře. Nikdy?“ Kniha zahrnuje do debaty umělecká díla z období od 4. do 6. stol. zobrazující Matku Boží nebo díla objednaná ženami. Nová ikonografie, která se na nich objevuje, neznázorňuje Marii jako patricijku, či dívku bez závoje. Maria má maforium, těžký závoj vdaných žen a vdov, a později i štolu. Na základě srovnání s dalšími díly i s dobovými texty lze dojít k závěru, že se maforium a štola staly znaky vysvěcených žen. Do ikonografie Matky Boží by se tak promítly prvky označující skupinu žen, která po krátkou dobu patřila do hierarchických struktur církve.

Abstract (in English)

What is and what was the role of women in the Church? Nowadays, women cannot be ordained and are excluded from the Church hierarchy of ordained people. But has this always been the case? The book “Women at the Altar. Never?” aims to answer this question. The book brings artwork from the 4th–6th centuries, commissioned by women, and works showing the Mother of God, into the debate. The iconography that emerges does not present Mary as a patrician or girl without a veil. She has a stole and maphorion, the heavy veil of married women and widows. Comparison with contemporary texts and artwork could lead to the conclusion that these items of clothing were attributes of ordained women. Mary’s iconography would thus mirror the signs of women briefly belonging to church hierarchical structures.
