V roce 378 utrpěly římské ozbrojené síly, vedené osobně císařem Valentem, drtivou porážku na bojišti nedaleko Adrianopole. I když většina historiků považuje uvedené střetnutí za významný mezník v dějinách pozdní římské říše, přesto se dodnes nepodařilo žádnému autorovi určit přesnou lokalitu bitevního pole. Rovněž není známo přesné složení starověkých armád, proč boj začal bez imperátorova rozkazu nebo jak samotný Valens zemřel. Ačkoli moderní autoři určili pět pravděpodobných lokalit, kde by se mohlo nacházet bitevní pole (většinou na základě podrobného rozboru Ammianových Res Gestae), přesto se domnívám, že až archeologický objev starověkého bojiště může přinést uspokojivé odpovědi na některé zásadní otázky o bojových operacích mezi barbary a Římany v letech 376 - 378 n. l.

In 378 AD, Roman troops headed by the Emperor Valens clashed with the army of Germanic and other refugees near Adrianople and suffered a crushing defeat. Although most modern historians consider this battle as important historical event, it is still unknown where the battlefield is located. We don't know the structure of the ancient armies, why the fight began without Valens' command and how the East Roman Emperor died. This paper, based on the detailed analysis of sources and theories published by modern authors in their publications and articles, aims to find answers to these four questions and reach some conclusions. Modern authors have so far found five possible locations of the ancient battlefiled (based on the references in the ancient sources), but in my opinion only the archaeological research of this battleground can ensure the clear answer. In the same way, the modern historians could answer the other questions. The only one source (Marcellinus' Res Gestae) includes the detailed description of some historical events. Discovery of bones or other relics of arms can provide some new and important informations about war in the years 376 - 378 AD and help to answer the above mentioned questions.
