Abstract
The notion of Renaissances and decadences are crucial into the historical research on the visual culture of medieval Rome. The goal of this paper is to understand the reasons for such a perception. Does it correspond to the reality, it is a consequence of specific historical situations, or there is a more complex reason for it?
