Abstract
Nowadays, science is presented mainly in the form of publications, specifically scientific articles in dedicated journals. Various systems of scientific evaluation takes into account for number of publications and their placement in journals of various ranks. Articles serve as a valuable source of information that is being used throughout all stages of research – from initial data mining, through methodology adaptation up to comparison of new and published results. However, there is reported a high number of articles with insufficient description of procedures, results that cannot be repeated or simply conclusions that are not well supported by data. Such papers can be found both in top journals and in the low-level “predatory” journals. In this talk, the main sources of such errors and issues will be discussed together with a few examples. The main aim is to make students aware of potential problems, gain a critical point of view on the published works and hopefully to improve their own scientific skills.
