HAE is caused by insufficient suppressionof complement and contact-system cascades due to a deficiencyof functional C1 inhibitor (C1-INH). It has been demonstratedthat HAE abdominal attacks are more frequent during preg-nancy, but there is no consensus on which trimester is mostassociated with increased attack rates. Some data suggest thatmore severe attacks and symptoms occur during thefirsttrimester, whereas other data suggest a greater number of attacksin the second and third trimesters. Changes in hormone levelsduring pregnancy may exacerbate HAE attacks, and concernswith administration of certain medications during pregnancy cancomplicate HAE management. ER -
