Insgesamt waren im digitalen Modell 41 Hügel sichtbar. In den Jahren 2013 und 2014 wurden in zwei Grabungskampagnen zwei Tumuli (Grabhügel 14 und 15) im nordwestlichen Bereich des Hügelgräberfeldes ergraben. Die archäologischen Grabungen sollten neue Informationen über die Datierung und Bestattungsriten liefern sowie Erkenntnisse über die Bautechnik und Innenkonstruktion der Aufschüttung erbringen. Die zwei untersuchten Grabhügel lassen vermuten, dass die Bestattungsaktivitäten hier bereits in der ersten Hälfte des 7. Jahrhunderts einsetzen. Eine besondere Bedeutung kommt dem Fundort Bernhardsthal auch zu, weil es sich um das erste frühmittelalterliche Grabhügelfeld mit nachgewiesener Brandbestattung in Österreich handelt. ER -
