Abstract
Strategic business management has become a common management method. Yet views about the impact on business performance are inconsistent and dispersed among different business disciplines. We proceed from the premise that the benefits that enterprises can gain from a high-quality strategic business management depends mainly on institutional conditions in their home environment. Based on the research made as a part of ROSTAPO international project focused on competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises by institutional theory among international business, Czech and Austrian construction enterprises, we assessed the transfer of backward knowledge into business practice with a view to increasing their performance. The results of the analysis, which presents a set of 288 enterprises, show that the application of a methodology and a system of strategic business management has an impact on business performance. However, it is necessary to state that the differences in the institutional environment in each country of the project, namely Austria and Czech Republic, have an impact on the effective application of backward knowledge of the strategic management of the company. However, it is also clear from the presentation of the results that these differences have decreased over time.
