Abstract
Nordic walking improves physical condition more than walking without poles, since it involves more muscles and muscle groups. The aim of this study was to reveal the extent, to which people are informed on this activity and whether they are aware of its healts benefits. Knowledge of respondents was tested by the on-line anonymous questionnaire. The survey was attended by 74 respondents (47 men and 27 women). Average age was 37.2. The youngest respondent was 14, and the oldest one was 81 years old. The survey revealed that 79.7% of respondents have heard of this physical activity before, 23% have an experience on their own, and 8.1% perform it actively. Concerning theoretical knowledge, 22.7% correctly answered the question about its origin (Finland). 55% of respondents were aware of equipment needed for this activity (specially designed poles), and 77% of respondents povided correct answer that Nordic Walking is a sport activity suitable for all age cotegories. 45.9% of respondents knew that Nordic Walking brings not only joy of outdoor sport activity and an increase of physical fitness but also health benefits. The questionnaire survey also revealed that respondents´ awareness of Nordic Walking is quite fair, theoretical information concerning Nordic Walking origin and its benefits is also sufficient. However, only a small percentage of respondents perform this sport actively. This could be changed by more massive promotion and education of the public.
