Abstract

Suor Teresa o Elisabetta Soarez (Novara, Crotti, 1851) è un dramma in cinque atti rappresentato sui palcoscenici di tutto il mondo dalla Compagnia Drammatica Italiana. Recitata sempre in lingua originale, la pièce trova collocazione all’interno di uno straordinario fenomeno internazionale che caratterizzò il XIX secolo, quello delle tournée intercontinentali dei Grandattori italiani di prosa, ed incrocia la vita e la carriera di una delle maggiori interpreti tragiche di fama mondiale che l’Ottocento ricordi ovvero Adelaide Ristori, dalla quale l’opera fu consacrata a vero e proprio capolavoro internazionale. Suor Teresa è, dunque, un testo teatrale di grande interesse, recitato in lingua italiana in tutto il mondo, composto nel 1848 dal novarese Luigi Camoletti (1803-1880), intellettuale poliedrico, giornalista, commediografo, librettista, critico e storico del teatro, noto soprattutto per la composizione di drammi sentimentali e ‘ad effetto’, con i quali raggiunge ampio consenso di pubblico, soprattutto all’estero. A causa del delicato argomento affrontato, di matrice anticlericale, l'opera fu soggetta a modifiche e tagli della censura. L'oggetto, ritenuto scottante e disdicevole, rischiava di macchiare infatti il buon nome del clero altolocato che, dietro forzate professioni di fede, occultava gli interessi politici ed economici delle famiglie bene del periodo. Queste stesse proibizioni alimentavano al contempo la curiosità delle platee, animate dal coraggio e dalla determinazione del personaggio.

Abstract (in English)

Suor Teresa or Elisabetta Soarez (Novara, Crotti, 1851) is a five-act drama represented on stages all over the world by the Italian Drama Company. Always recited in the original language, the play finds its place within an extraordinary international phenomenon that characterized the nineteenth century, that of the intercontinental tours of Italian prose great actors, and crosses the life and career of one of the greatest tragic interpreters of world fame. that the nineteenth century remembers Adelaide Ristori, from whom the work was consecrated as a true international masterpiece. Sister Teresa is, therefore, a theatrical text of great interest, recited in Italian all over the world, composed in 1848 by Luigi Camoletti (1803-1880) from Novara, a multifaceted intellectual, journalist, playwright, librettist, critic and historian of the theater, known above all for the composition of sentimental and 'effect' dramas, with which he reaches a wide consensus with the public, especially abroad. Due to the delicate subject addressed, of anticlerical matrix, the work was subject to changes and cuts by the censorship. The object, considered burning and unbecoming, in fact risked tarnishing the good name of the high-ranking clergy who, behind forced professions of faith, hid the political and economic interests of the good families of the period. These same prohibitions fed at the same time the curiosity of the audiences, animated by the courage and determination of the character.
