V předloženém svazku nabízíme překlad čtvrté části pojednání Ars Conjectandi (1713) Jacoba Bernoulliho. Pojednání představuje důležitý příspěvek k dějinám pravděpodobnostního počtu a dějinám statistiky. V čtvrté části se Bernoulli zamýšlel nad tím, jak bychom měli usuzovat v situacích, které nejsme schopni rozhodnout na základě racionálního uvažování. V případech, kdy selhává logické uvažování ve smyslu tzv. umění myslet, tedy ars cogitandi, můžeme se uchýlit k umění odhadu, tedy ars conjectandi.

In this volume we offer a translation of the fourth part of the treatise Ars Conjectandi (1713) by Jacob Bernoulli. The treatise represents an important contribution to the history of probability calculus and the history of statistics. In the fourth part, Bernoulli wondered how we should infer in situations that we are not able to decide on the basis of rational reasoning. In cases where logical reasoning in the sense of the so-called art of thinking, i.e. ars cogitandi, fails, we can resort to the art of estimation, i.e. ars conjectandi.
