Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to summarize the existing etymological attempts explaining the oronym Sudetes and to propose a new solution conforming to linguistic, historical and archaeological data. A new solution proposed here assumes an adaptation of the originally Latin designation *Sude:ta, with regard to the Latin expression saxeae sudes, i.e. “rocky peaks, crags”, used by Apuleius.
