Abstract

V knize Our Aesthetic Categories: Zany, Cute, Interesting pojednává Sianne Ngaiová o svých vybraných estetických kategoriích, které v minulosti stá- ly na okraji zájmu estetické teorie, ale v postmoderní kapitalistické společnosti se staly klíčovými nástroji evaluace nejen umělecký děl. Tyto kategorie jsou podle ní spojeny se současnými společenskými procesy – produkcí, recepcí a distribucí kul- turních artefaktů, což jasně reflektuje současnou společenskou dynamiku. S od- kazem na společenský, ekonomický i historický kontext, v němž dnes popisujeme konzumovaná díla jako ztřeštěná, roztomilá a zajímavá, můžeme dle Ngaiové pozo- rovat reprezentační praktiky a také specifické způsoby percepce i myšlení. V este- tických kategoriích se tedy odrážejí normy i hodnoty dané doby a skrze přesuny kategorií mezi periferií a centrem lze budovat historicky ukotvené vymezení esteti- ky, jejího zájmu a klíčových problémů v průběhu času. Předkládaný příspěvek cha- rakterizuje dynamiku, kterou popisuje Ngaiová v postmoderní teorii i praxi, a uká- že, že tato proměnlivost není záležitostí výhradně dneška, ale jejím prostřednictvím můžeme zkoumat také historické epochy a proměny kultury. Kromě kategorií, s ni- miž pracuje Ngaiová, zaměříme pozornost na klasické „velké“ estetické kategorie, které nabízí spis O třech dnech (De tribus diebus) středověkého myslitele Hugona ze Svatého Viktora. Pokusíme se nalézt průsečík mezi oběma autory, které od sebe dělí téměř tisíc let.

Abstract (in English)

The Periphery of Concepts: Notes on Dynamics of Some Aesthetic Catego­ ries. – In her book Our Aesthetic Categories: Zany, Cute, Interesting, Sianne Ngai deals with her choice of aesthetic categories, which in the past was in the periphery of the interest of aesthetic theory, but, in the postmodern capitalist society, became key tools for evaluating (not only) works of art. These categories are, according to her, connected with the current social processes – the production, the reception and the distribution of cultural artefacts – which distinctly reflect current social dyna- mics. With reference to a social, economic and historical context in which we to- day describe the consumed works as zany, cute and interesting, according to Ngai, we can observe the representational practices and also a specific way of thinking and perception. The aesthetic categories thus reflect the norms and values of a cer- tain epoch and through transfers of the categories between periphery and cen- ter, the historically anchored determination of the aesthetics, its interest and key problems over time can be established. The submitted contribution characterizes the dynamics which Ngai describes in theory and practice, and shows that through this variability also historical epochs and cultural changes can be examined. Aside from the categories which are treated by Ngai, we will focus on the classical “big” aesthetic categories treated by the medieval scholar Hugh of St Victor in his treat­ ise On the Three Days (De tribus diebus). We are attempting to find an intersec- tion point between the concepts of aesthetic of authors living almost a thousand years apart.
