Abstract

Cílem intenzivní medicíny je záchrana života a zdraví při zachování akceptovatelné úrovně kvality života pacienta. V určitém okamžiku trajektorie onemocnění pacienta muže být tento cíl již nereálný a pokračování v tzv. život udržující terapii / orgánové podpore je neadekvátní a pouze prodlužuje utrpení pacienta a jeho umírání. V intenzivní péči umírá čím dál více pacientů, a to zejména po ukončení nebo nerozšiřování této orgánové podpory.

Abstract (in English)

The goal of intensive care is to save life and health while maintaining an acceptable level of quality of life for the patient. At some point in the patient's disease trajectory, this goal may no longer be unrealistic, and continuing with so-called life-sustaining therapy / organ support is inadequate and only prolongs the patient's suffering and death. More and more patients are dying in intensive care, especially after the cessation or non-expansion of this organ support.
