Abstract

V originále

It was a widespread phenomenon in Central Europe of the late Middle Ages that the pledging of crown lands became an essential component of extraordinary revenues. The Kingdom of Hungary was no exception. The present study investigates the emergence and circumstances of the royal pledging in the country. It argues that despite the kingdom’s golden age in precious metal mining, the treasury experienced difficulties not only in King Louis’ last years of reign and he had to turn to pledging more frequently than it was suggested earlier by the historiography. Since it was Louis who laid the groundwork of royal pledging in the country, he determined its form and had influence on its later evolution.
