Abstract

Der Artikel versammelt und ergänzt die Forschung zu den im Gedicht Digenes Akrites verwendeten Eigennamen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird auf das Manuskript G gelegt. Zunächst werden die historischen und literarischen Schichten des Epos behandelt. Darauf folgt eine Analyse der Personennamen. Die meisten davon können entweder der paulikianischen oder der kommagenischen Schicht zugeordnet werden, während eine Kontaminierung der beiden Schichten und Doppelungen der Namen häufig anzutreffen sind. Ferner werden Toponyme und Demonyme untersucht. Das Ziel des Artikels besteht darin, die sinnbildende Bedeutung sprechender Namen, intertextueller Bezüge und literarischer Assoziationen zu unterstreichen, die für das mittelalterliche Publikum von besonderer Relevanz sein mussten. Vor allem in der Version G dient der intentionale und kreative Gebrauch der Eigennamen dazu, die Themen und Motive zu betonen sowie die Kohärenz und Einheit des episodischen Gedichts zu stärken.

Abstract (in English)

This paper summarizes and complements the research on the proper nouns used in the poem, with a special focus on the G manuscript. Starting with an account of the historical and literary layers of the epos, it continues with an exploration of personal names. Most of them can be sorted into either the Paulician or the Kommagenian layer, while contamination of the two layers and doubling of the names is frequent. Further, geographical names and demonyms are examined. The main aim of the article is to highlight the importance of speaking names, intertextual connections, and literary associations, which often must have been of much greater importance for the medieval recipient. Especially in the G version, the intentional and creative use of names helps to emphasize the main themes and so to preserve the coherence and the unity of the episodic poem.
